Water Damaged Parquetry Floor

Situation

Hot water system inside cupboard of the bar on the lower level incurred a burst pipe Friday morning when the owner was home. By the time the water was turned off, standing water was above the parquetry timber floor and flooded the office downstairs.

Water Damage

Areas affected were the bar/kitchen, hallway, under stairwell and pool room which where all parquetry timber floor and carpet in office with timber contents.

Water over timber floor was extracted first while moving affected items (wet) outside to minimise further damage. Surface of timber floor was then wiped dry. Carpet of office was extracted, contents blocked up using high density foam blocks to protect from further damage (refer photo) and top dried carpet which had rubber underlay with dehumidifier due to furniture and will aid drying contents at the same time.

Parquetry Floor

In order to aid drying, the affected timber floor needs to be contained as best possible. Containment zip wall was installed at bottom of stairwell and closed doors of other rooms not affected. Applied nine heat mats to cover the affected area with dehumidifier. Equipment operated for 11 days after which the timber floor was dried. During this period, our timber floor specialist attended who confirmed that the floor can be saved.

Timber floor required a slight sand and stain to restore it to a pre-loss condition. Insurer was very grateful for our quick response and drying the timber floor (restoring the timber floor is a lot more cost effective than replacement).

Structure

At our second attendance, skirting boards on one wall had swelled from the moisture and split away from the wall. Due to the unique design and size of the skirting boards, builder removed these until everything was dry and re-attached these afterwards.

Carpet

When the carpet was dry, MCS and Owner assessed furniture where no visible damage was detected, contents were moved outside, carpet professionally cleaned and furniture put back into place the next day after it was dry.
